SBS Technologies, Inc., Connectivity Products (formerly SBS Bit 3 Operations) introduces the Model 628 bus-to-bus adapter, engineered for demanding applications requiring CompactPCI (cPCI) to VMEbus connectivity and fiber-optic capabilities. Exceptional performance (DMA rates up to 35M Bytes/sec), very low latency, deterministic response, and transparent operation are provided by the adapterís rich feature set. Model 628's fiber-optic features make it ideal for environments requiring noise immunity, high-performance, electrical safety, isolation and long-distance separation (up to 500 meters).
"When directly connected by the Model 628 adapter, the VMEbus and cPCI bus donít just communicate, they operate as one", said Tom David, Product Manager, Adapters. "At the hardware level, the adapter translates cPCI bus signals into VMEbus signals, and, conversely, VME signals into cPCI signals. The user reaps the benefits of new cPCI design while retaining use of legacy VME I/O."
A version of the adapter, Model 628-9U, is available for VMEbus systems with 9U size slots. Model 628 and Model 628-9U are functionally identical. The difference is that Model 628-9U's VMEbus card comes installed in a 9U holder.
Price and Availability
Models 628 and 628-9U will be available for shipment in July of 1999. Model 628 is priced at $3595.00. Model 628-9U is priced at $4295.00. Model 628 includes one 3U cPCI card, one 6U VMEbus card, Support Software CD-ROM, and a manual. Model 628-9U includes one 3U cPCI card, one 6U VMEbus card installed in a 9U holder, Support Software CD-ROM, and a manual. Fiber-optic cable to connect the two adapter cards is required but is ordered separately.
Features
The adapter supports two methods of intersystem communication: memory mapping and Direct Memory Access (DMA). Memory mapping controls random access (PIO) transfers. Random access reads and writes from the cPCI system to the VMEbus, from the cPCI bus to optional dual port RAM, and from the VMEbus to the cPCI bus are supported. The adapter provides flexible mapping of cPCI bus address space to VMEbus memory and I/O address space.
Controller Mode DMA and Slave Mode DMA are supported. Both DMA modes support Dual Port RAM. DMA transfers from chassis to chassis are at sustained rates above 35M Bytes/sec. 32-bit Block Mode transfers are supported by both modes. Controller Mode DMA also supports 16-bit Block Mode Transfers. Byte swapping and word swapping functions are also provided.
The VMEbus adapter card meets IEEE 1014C specifications. The cPCI adapter card meets PICMG 2.0 specifications but is limited to PCI 2.0 compliance.Extensive Support Software
Support Software provides all the tools required to access and control the adapter. Each Support Software model includes a loadable device driver, extensive example programs, tools for device driver installation, and documentation. Support Software greatly simplifies writing portable code to use with other SBS Connectivity products. It is provided for cPCI systems running Windows NT.
