SBS Bit 3 Operations Unveils High-Performance Fiber-Optic Bus Adapter for PCI to VMEbus Connectivity

SBS Bit 3 Operations has unveiled the Model 618 bus-to-bus adapter that is engineered for demanding applications requiring PCI to VMEbus connectivity and fiber-optic capabilities. The adapter provides real-time, transparent, and deterministic connection between a PCI and VMEbus system; consequently, the PCI computer can function either as a coprocessor or as the only processor on the VMEbus system. Model 618's fiber-optic features make it ideal for environments requiring noise immunity, high-performance, electrical safety, isolation and long-distance separation. "Model 618, the next generation of our widely used Model 617 PCI-VMEbus adapter, allows current 617 users painless migration to fiber-optics; upgrading is virtually plug-and-play. Applications written using SBS support software are highly portable," said Jerry Medley, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of SBS Bit 3 Operations. "For those migrating to PCI from VMEbus platforms, Model 618 provides the means to retain use of VMEbus I/O and special purpose boards." Price and Availability
Model 618 will be available for shipment October 30, 1998 and is priced at $4,350.00. The adapter includes one short form factor PCI card, one 6U VMEbus card, support software, and a manual. Fiber-optic cable to connect the two adapter cards is required but is ordered separately. Features
With the adapter, a standard PC or workstation can be used instead of a single board computer; therefore, the user can take advantage of a wealth of off-the-shelf software, the latest processor technology, and worldwide support from major PC, workstation, and operating system manufacturers. Model 618 provides two methods of intersystem communication: memory mapping and Direct Memory Access (DMA). Memory mapping controls random access (PIO) transfers. Random access reads and writes from the PCI system to the VMEbus, from the PCI bus to optional dual port RAM, and from the VMEbus to the PCI bus are supported. The adapter provides flexible mapping of PCI bus address space to VMEbus memory and I/O address space. Controller Mode DMA and Slave Mode DMA are supported. Both DMA modes support Dual Port RAM and 32-bit Block Mode transfers. Controller Mode DMA also supports 16-bit Block Mode Transfers. DMA transfers from chassis to chassis are at sustained rates above 26M Bytes/sec. Byte swapping and word swapping functions are provided. The VMEbus adapter card meets IEEE 1014C specifications. The PCI adapter card conforms to PCI Local Bus Specification 2.0. Extensive Support Software
Support software provides all the tools required to access and control the adapter. Each support software model includes a loadable device driver, extensive example programs, tools for device driver installation, and documentation. Support software greatly simplifies writing portable code to use with other SBS Bit 3 products. Support software is available for Pentium platforms running Window 95 and Windows NT; Sun platforms running Solaris; IBM and Motorola Power PC platforms running AIX; and Hewlett Packard platforms running HP-UX.
